Gender Through Comic Books
By Christy Blanch
So I just got some good news, mostly concerning me (well completely concerning me), Christy Blanch; is heading a free for all online comic book course. Blanch, who is from Ball State University is teaching a course on "Gender Through Comic Books" focusing on the gender identity, stereotypes and roles of both men and women throught the history of the comic book medium. She will be joined by stalwart comic book writers Brian K Vaughn (Y The Last Man, Saga) Scott Snyder (Batman New 52), Gail Simone (Batgirl, Birds of Prey), Brian Michael Bendis (Avengers, Ultimate Spider-Man) and Mark Waid (Thunderbolts, Daredevil). The course as mentioned is an MOOC (Massive Open Online Course) available to every student aspiring or passionate about the comics industry for FREE!
Yep, it's at no cost!!! In fact all you need to do is by the Comic Books they list out as soon as you enroll. These can be probably found cheap on Amazon or second hand on E-Bay. Join this cause all I can say is that the course will be an insightful look into gender differences, and most likely help students realize the difficulties for strong female character acceptance in not just this medium but within other mediums such as Television and Film.
It begins in April 2nd so enroll now over here
Not convinced well you can check out acclaimed Eisner award winning writer Mark Waid's own appeal (on his blog) for this course and Blanch's own interview detailing the course. Also embedded below is a video detailing why you should take the course, by none other than Stan "The Man" Lee
