Best of Bollywood 2013: An Interlude

Best of Bollywood 2013

An Interlude

I decided to take an interlude regarding the best Hindi films of 2013 because my Tintin's Top Thirty Best Bollywood Films article is taking longer than usual (read I'm a lazy ass).

So I created an interlude for my own personal awards for the Best Bollywood films this year.

Why?

Because first I haven't had the chance to watch every Hollywood film (especially the underrated and indie films that I would loved to create an award for eg. The Underdog Awards).

Next because I am seriously fucking tiffed at the stupidity of Indian Film Awards (all of them!)

Seriously the films in contention in Indian awards, make the Oscars look fair and great in comparison (which they of course are, expect the Oscars are slowly but surely losing tons of credibility).

Let's take a look shall we?

At the Filmfare awards; Sharukh Khan has been nominated for Best Actor for at least appearing and dancing on the Awards stage...I mean for Chennai Express. Along with him his director Rohit Shetty has also been nominated for blasting every car and messing the physics in this world...sorry, for best director.

This is just a microcosm of the issue plaguing Indian Film awards whether it be Filmfare or IIFA. Last years awards albeit in favor of the great but not excellent Barfi!, at least had the right nominees on the list.

This year major movies are missing whether it be the widely appreciated The Lunchbox, the poignantly powerful Shahid or the romantic ballad Lootera (especially Lootera, which is practically missing from every award show!)

So I thought I'd make my own awards.

PS: For the Hollywood hopefuls, if you don't mind waiting four-five more months I could present my Underdog Awards of 2013 to the Hollywood films that didn't get the credit they deserved. Although come to think of it, I'll be too busy by then.

So here goes for the awards

Magneto's Movies: Oscar Mania

Oscar Mania

With the Oscars creeping up quickly, this review post will try its best to review the films that are in line to win the best picture award at the 86th academy awards. These are short reviews.

As of yet I have only watched two of the ten nominees (yep, that's a steep climb). Each time I watch another nominated film, I will update it on this post.

Below I will examine each film and what I feel their chances are not just for best film but also any other categories they are nominated for. At the end I will pull a full list of where each award should go from the nominees at the 86th Academy Awards for the main awards.

The list of films I haven't watched is as follows; Nebraska, Philomena and August: Osage County

So for now lets head to the reviews of...

100 Years 100 Movies: My 100 Favorite Bollywood Films, The Master List

100 Years, 100 Movie

My 100 Favorite Bollywood Films

Master List

So I've changed a few things since I was unable to complete my ten part series before the passing of the 100th Bollywood year.

I'm not going to do ten parts, instead I will copy the data from the first part and add it to the next 90 and created a massive post on all 100 films together. I will delete my blogs 100th post since it wont be required, this I consider to by Ultimate Sacrifice (filmy melodrama :P).

Before I do that though, I felt I should first put up a master list of the 100 films that are my favorites. So that those not interested to read the extensive list, can simply see the films I liked. This also so that I don't change the final list, cause I've been going back and doing that. As well as, so that incase I don't finish this mega post, you'll at least know my 100 favorites.

Enjoy!

(Oh and once again I've just numbered them for ease, these are not the order of ranking)

Tintin's Top Ten: Bollywood films of 2013 Honorable Members

Tintin's Top Ten

Bollywood films of 2013

Honorable Members

So this list is a bit wonky, while I want it to be highlighted as a positive since most of the films here are those that might not either get the due they deserve or were good but just not good enough.

Then in the list, there's also the films that just flat out were okay but a disappointment in comparison to the hype they generated or the people involved in them.

Oh yes!

You must be thinking what the hell?!

Where's the best of the year list?

As I said before, I'm looking to expand this feature this year. As such I will have a best of year list divided into three for the best 30 films of the year where as I also decided to include an extra ten as Honorable choices (this post).

At first I was just going to list those films and give a short summary, but I felt compelled to expand on them because one of the films on this list was one that I enjoyed the first time I watched it and was disappointed by it the second time I watched it. Still I wont deny it wasn't fun (but illogical fun), and it has made a certain Dhoom at the box office *wink wink*.

Side Note: Instead of the what it did right/wrong method used in the worst list, I went a basic way and just analyzed the film top to bottom.

So lets just get to the meat and bones...

Tintin's Top Ten: Worst Bollywood Films of 2013

Tintin's Top Ten

Worst Bollywood Films of 2013

Before I get into listing the worst films of this year, I would like to put some light into the films I haven't watched this year, obviously that could be quite a list…so let me just put those that I was not interested in watching;

Movies didn't bother wasting time on: ABCD (Any Body Can Dance), Murder 3, I Me aur Main, Boss, Satya 2, Gori Tere Pyaar Mein and R…Rajkumar

I'd like to point out that in the event of tied scores, I decided that the film that I like the most among the tied ones was the one that goes one rank higher e.g..

Lets say I gave ABCD and Murder 3 both 2/10 but I liked ABCD more, than it goes to spot number 1 where Murder 3 is 2 even if Murder 3 had better individual scores.

I've made my peace with the fact that certain films will make tons of money, no matter how undeserving they are. Such films are entertaining for the masses, heck even sometimes for me.

So for someone who only has the means to go to the theater with his family in a year is bound to choose an entertaining escape from troubles of daily life that has the right doses of action, comedy and romance in it.

Even then I also have the voice to express my personal opinion on a movie which I did not like or which I felt was a waste of my 300-400 Rs at the theater.  Especially by the end where I turn into a maniac on a hate rant.

This year unlike the last I did my best to suffer through countless films…some which I actually enjoyed (partially) and came with a list of ten films that were the worst of the year. The good thing to take from this is that, so the first few films may just be average compared to the worst ones I haven't watched.

Although the worst film that is listed below as number one, I can guarantee is the worst film of THE YEAR!

Films that just missed the cut; (These are ones I watched)

Aatma-Nawazzudin Siddiqui wastes his talent on the lamest horror I've seen in years

Phata Poster Nikla Hero-Melodramatic nonsense where Rajkumar Santoshi tries to recapture the fleeting genius of his cult classic Andaz Apna Apna and mega hit Ajab Prem Ki Gazaab Kahani

John Day-Bleach blond Naseeruddin Shah and a one expression Randeep Hooda. The quintessential movie where talents waste their time for a paycheck

Onwards to the worst of the year…
