The 50 X: Man With the Mojo

The 50 X

Man With the Mojo

This 50 X edition is based on alien mutant Longshot, whose arch-nemesis is the overlord of his world; Mojo, a man hellbent on making his planet a deadly reality TV show. Longshot must free his people. He needs the X-Men, he is an X-Man.

File:Longshot2.JPG49. Longshot

Alias: Longshot

First Appearance: Longshot Issue.1 (September 1985)

Creators: Ann Nocenti and Art Adams

Species: Artificial Humanoid

Powers: super-humanly acrobatic, ability to defy probability, advanced healing factor

Team Affiliations: Free men (Mojoverse), X-Men, X-factor Investigations, New Excalibur, Exiles

Best Alternate Reality Version: Shattershot, in this X-Annuals cross over. The X-Men fight with Longshot to save Mojoverse. Here there is another alternate reality Longshot, that has grown old battling Mojo through the years.

Current Status: He tried but failed to become a teacher at the Jean Grey School of Higher Learning. He is also a member of the X-Factor Investigations team.

Number: 49. One of the really odd ball X-Men characters, that never really got off. He just didn't seem as humorous as he could be. Longshot is an interesting character though and at one point could have been questioned on his link to Cable. Since both have a glowing eye.  His a surprise ladies man and was on the radar of Psylocke, Rogue and Dazzler for quite some time. His happy go lucky nature however still added quite a lot of variety, to the darker X-Men of the 80's.

Top 5 Big Moments

5. Mojo Mania

That's Mojo, the threatening (snicker!) ruler and X-Villain of Mojoverse.

A humanoid-life form created by Arize. The head geneticist of Mojoverse, ruled by a spineless creature named Mojo. Longshot is meant to partake in reality TV for the media mogul Mojo. Arize however gives him independent thought (alongside other humanoids) so as they can rebel against Mojoverse's established slave rule.

Longshot and many others rebel, unfortunately the weapons of the spineless ones are far advanced. Thus the rebels are crushed, even though they gained mystic luck based powers. He is rendered amnesiac but Lonshot soon escapes. Mojo sends tracker like dogs Gog and Magog to find him.

He lands on Earth with no memory, but due to his luck he is nicknamed Longshot (actual time when he got his name). Due to his powers he comes in contact with female stunt actor Richotet Rita. There he subdues and adopts Magog, while Mojo with his assistant Spiral arrive on Earth. Longshot defeats them and with the help of Rita, Quark (another free humanoid) and Doctor Strange he sends Mojo and Spiral back to Mojoverse. He then heads home with his friends to free the slave reality.-Longshot Issue.1-6

4. Dazzled in The Outback

Popping up amnesiac (once again) onto the X-Men's danger room, Longshot soon earns their trust and becomes a member of the X-Men. He however is part of the X-Men team that dies and is resurrected (seriously complex). Withe the resurrection being widely unknown, the team settles in the deserts of Australia. From there they continue their work as X-Men with the use of teleporter and face off against a number of enemies including the Reavers and Sinister's Marauders.-Uncanny X-Men Vol.1 Issue.221-229

This is the point where Longshot's debonair style comes into play, his luck based powers mean that the female members are attracted to him (apart from Storm). He falls in love with pop-star mutant and light/sound based X-Man; Dazzler. However this is short lived, as an identity crisis causes Longshot to leave the X-Men.-Uncanny X-Men Vol.1 Issue.242-248

He is soon reunited with Dazzler in Mojoverse. Here they are captured by Mojo, after which the X-Men and 'Mojo II: The Sequel' (I'm not kidding) rescue them. Together they all get rid of Mojo's slave rule on Mojoverse. Dazzler also learns that she is pregnant with Longshot's child (Shatterstar, the X-Force member). They have adventures in Mojoverse, including taking care of the X-Babies.-X-Men Vol.1 Issue.5-7 and 10-11

Eventually Longshot is presumed dead, when Dazzler returns to the X-Men without a baby or him.-X-Men Vol.2 Issue.47

3. Exiled

This is a part of Longshot's character history I have never read. Longshot joins the alternate reality hopping mutant team; Exiles. He is brought to them so as to face off dangerous mutnat Proteus, since Longshot is a one-of a kind being due to Mojoverse not being copied in any other reality.

2. Memory Loss...Again!!!

During his tenure with the Exiles, Longshot is brainwashed by Madame Hydra (AKA Viper) into attacking Blink. Afterwards, on a mission in the regualar 616 Marvel Universe, Longshot leaves Exiles. He remains to re-kindle the spark between him and Dazzler, but memory loss prevents this.-Exiles Vol.1 Issue.18-19 and X-Men: Die By The Sword Mini Series

1. Luck Factor

The most insulting thing a father could possibly hear.

Longshot joins X-Factor,once he is able to defeat his Skrull imposter during the Secret Invasion. He joins X-Factor in finding Darwin's father. He also has no idea for the extension of his powers since his memory loss. There is also the splendid interaction between him and his presumed son; Shatterstar.-X-Factor Vol.3 Issue.47
