That's one hell of a nominee list, a few things to note;

-Both categories especially Comedy/Musical/Romantic have been particularly weak this year.
-Had there been a Breakthrough Director Award in 2014, Nitesh Tiwari would have definitely been nominated in it for Bhoothnath Returns; here however he is billed as a top five director despite a tepid film.
-Though either of Vidyarthi and Salim Diwan could have been counted as Leading, they both took part in a fairly divided three part stories in Bollywood Diaries making them equal parts supporting. Plus part of me just couldn't have the heart to leave out either one of these fabulous performances. My only cheat!
-Unlike last year, I finally pulled the trigger on seven nominees for Breakthrough Director as there were many fascinating captains of their ships.
-This also allowed seven deserving nominees for the now rightly rebranded Indian Language Films Section. PS: I know English isn't necessarily and Indian Language, but it does count as below national language Hindi in India
-I increased the number of technical awards and nominees as I felt confident in spotting the efforts of such in films this year, including introducing a category for Sound Design and Mixing.

-Most Importantly I was unable to catch these 3 well received films; Kahaani 2, Island City and Moh Maya Money

This is all for now, the Awards show begins with the Technical Categories [Music] soon...

Hindi Cinema in 2016

Hindi Cinema in 2016

2016 hasn't been a great year.

That's no exaggeration.

In fact its stench has been felt through the first few days of the new year with the sadly demise of the legendary Om Puri today. Rest in Peace.

For me personally it hasn't been the best of years, with family issues and other things cropping up.

However on a professional front, my education at least in an official sense is over and I am truly and rightfully now part of the Hindi Film Industry and part of its most quantifiable bunch of people; known as strugglers.

As for cinema, Indian cinema has flourished; breaking new grounds and absolutely dominating on both a local and international stage. However the same cannot be said for Hindi cinema, while there have been some blistering pieces of work that have either found great over praise or been hidden in the shadows, most of the year has been just there. Still the HIndie Awards must go on.

As for the year, it hasn't necessarily had the kind of thematic link from the films of 2015 which were defined by the dysfunctional families that sort of heralded the barrier between old school and new age thinking the modern Indian family.

This year's Hindi cinema has been more about what goes behind the scenes rather than film themselves, it has hindered things yet also raise powerful questions for the society around, so let's have a spin through this crazy year that is 2016.

Experiencing the 18th Annual Mumbai Film Festival

MAMI 2016

The 18th edition of the JIO MAMI Mumbai Film Festival just ended this week with a big bang and great pomp and circumstance.

This was my second ever film festival, my first being last years edition of MAMI. It has been a hectic, entertaining week that allows me to walk away with some new friends, awesome cinematic experiences and emotionally stirring moments.

As a whole I was lucky enough to not only watch the works of internationally renowned film makers, but meet a few such aspiring struggling film buffs from within the Hindi film industry and get an insight into the madness that is cinema and the numbers of individuals who have an unbridled passion for it.

It's both scary and refreshing to see.

Some of the greatest films of the year were on display and of the 175 unbelievable tempting choices, in a roller coaster 7 days; I witnessed 27 amazing films [technically 28, but I walked out of one]

Instead of however doing a top ten, as it becomes so damn difficult. I'm just going to detail each films from a daily basis and give a round up on what to catch, what to miss, what was absolutely phenomenal and more...
